this just goes to show how loosely the term Unix can be used.. infact i am guilty of the same mistake... !
last year when I started learning unix\/linux i was obsessed with learning unix not linux and didn't know till about a couple of weeks ago that Free BSD Unix is basically open source.. I didn't even know what open source was till my brother pointed out that I was trying to download open source software mainly used for servers.. . and as silly as it seems I completely refused to believe that linux is unix and that linux is anything worth while..which as woofies link mentions is competition.. and this is for a reason. there is real power in linux-unix

UUID(3) Libuuid API UUID(3)
NAME
uuid - DCE compatible Universally Unique Identifier library
SYNOPSIS
#include <uuid/uuid.h>
DESCRIPTION
The UUID library is used to generate unique identifiers for objects that may be accessible beyond the local system. This library generates
UUIDs compatible with those created by the Open Software Foundation (OSF) Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) utility uuidgen.
The UUIDs generated by this library can be reasonably expected to be unique within a system, and unique across all systems. They could be
used, for instance, to generate unique HTTP cookies across multiple web servers without communication between the servers, and without fear
of a name clash.
