OK /etc/nsswitch.conf does not exist on the system.
Had a look in resolv.conf at someone elses suggestion, and it had 2 entries,
domain mshome.net
nameserver 192.168.0.1
192.168.0.1 is the DHCP server, totally confused by the domain, and should I have an entry for this system?
