Where did my programs go?
I notice that (Mandrake) Linux and Windows do not seem to operate alike in terms of installing third party software.
Windows, on one hand, creates icons and adds items to the Start Menu, with the help of the InstallShield--or equivalent, of course, but Linux, on the other hand, seems to care less about creating items of which you can just click on the "Start" like button on the task bar of the X windows interface, and find the program you just installed to run it.
I installed a Penguin C++ IDE program I downloaded from Tucows, and I have looked in /usr but cannot seem to find it or even know what the program is named.
How can I find this to create a start-menu like shortcut for such a program? I did then try to install KDeveloper that came with Mandrake and that one created it's own shortcut, but what is it with these third party apps? On top of that, the RPM installer does not even mention a path unlike InstallShield (or equivalent).

Hello,
I have a simple question. How do make it so i can lauch a program from the shell. For instance I want to install firefox 2 and I wanna launch it with ff2 in the terminal, so i tried this to my .bashrc file:
alias ff2='/path/./firefox'

I just upgraded to Snow Leopard and some of my programs no longer work.
I need a good DVD ripper/encoder. I was using Handbrake and Mac the Ripper but they no longer work on my MAC. They also don't have a newer viersion that works with my OS.

Suppose i run passwd via bash shell. It is a suid program, which temporarily runs as root(owner) and modifies the user entries.

installer - Solaris Web Start installer utility SYNOPSIS
installer [-locales list] [-nodisplay] [-noconsole] [-debug] DESCRIPTION
The installer utility invokes a Web Start install wizard sequence which will lead the user through a sequence of installation panels. This installer utility is found on many CDs that are shipped with Solaris and it will be found among the top level files of these CDs. When the installer is on a CD being accessed from a desktop file manager, the installer can be double clicked to start the installation sequence. If the user is not currently the system's root user, the root user password will be requested. The installer utility can also be run from other UNIX scripts. Usually, a script is used in conjunction with the utility's -nodis- play option. Add the -noconsole option for non-interactive scripts. OPTIONS
The following options are supported: -locales list Selects product translations for install, corresponding to the specified list of locales if the specified locale transla- tions are present on the installation media. Locales are supplied in a comma-separated list following the -locales option. An example list would appear as follows: installer -locales fr,de,it This would install products with translations for the French, German, and Italian locales. -nodisplay Runs the install without a graphical user interface. Use the default product install unless it was modified by the -locales options. -noconsole Run the install without any interactive text console device.
