yup I have got xemacs thru fink.
I wanted to run natively on Aqua, so I installed Mindlubes emacs and Xemacs as well. however, none of them support remote file saving opening, ftp etc.
The one builtin mac os works well with these. Like you , beacuse of the immense power of emacs , i want to be reasonably good with it. Also I access UNIX machines ,so it will be really handy.
On Linux, things are lot easier as there are lots of editors and I have got BBedit for OSX.
UNIX uses thru terminals is making me to learn emacs and I think I will be ok in long term.

The default is NOT to display CR characters (I expect to see them as ^M). I want to change this so they do show up.

NAME
Term::ReadLine::Zoid::Emacs - a readline emacs mode
SYNOPSIS
This class is used as a mode under Term::ReadLine::Zoid, see there for usage details.
DESCRIPTION
This mode provides some emacs key-bindings, taking the bash(1) implementation as a reference.
This module also provides a 'emac_multiline' key map.
KEY MAPPING
These bindings are additional to those in Term::ReadLine::Zoid which already contains some emacs key bindings.
escape, ^[ (prefix_meta)
meta-f (forward_word)
meta-b (backward_word)
^X^V (switch_mode_command)
Enter (vi) command mode. Taken from zsh(1).
^V, ^Q (quoted_insert)
Insert next key literally, ignoring any key-bindings.
WARNING: control or escape chars in the editline can cause unexpected results
