This works for me in bash:

then 
  echo "Database file \"$1\" does not exist!" 
  exit 1 
fi 

if [ ! `echo $1 | grep ".txt$"` ] 
then 
  echo "Database files must contain a "txt" extension!" 
  exit 1 
fi
