I would debug one init script at a time. And in the script currently being debugged, just put the line:

exec > /tmp/something.out 2>&1

and I would probably put it inside the case statement so it only applies to the "start" paragraph.

SYNOPSIS

       /dev/msglog

DESCRIPTION

       Output from system startup ("rc") scripts is directed to /dev/msglog, which dispatches it appropriately.
