KDE is fine if you have a fast computer with plenty of memory. My desktop box is a 1997 or so vintage (P2 350MHz), so KDE runs acceptably, though it takes way too long to load.
Generally speaking, I use just a window manager rather than an "integrated desktop".

I recently installed OpenBox to work with KDE in replacing the Kwin Session manager. A lot of things did seem to use less processing and memory, but it seems I've lost my KDE Desktop Effects. I managed to track down this in /home/user/.xsession-errors after trying to re-enable them:

NAME
0desktop -- add programs to the desktop environment
SYNOPSIS
0destkop [ URI ]
0destkop --manage
DESCRIPTION
0desktop can be used to create launchers for Zero Install applications in desktop environments supporting the freedesktop.org menu specifi-
cation (e.g. GNOME and KDE).
If the URI of a Zero Install application is given, this application is added. Without a URI, a dialog box is displayed prompting the user
to specify what to add. On success, a launcher is added to the user's menu which, when invoked, runs the application using the command
"0launch URI".
FILES
~/.local/share/applications
Default directory in which the .desktop file for the new launcher is created.
