Give you some practical statistics of mine ...

my Suse partition (including /home /var /usr) is 20GB and the free space is 7.8GB.

I installed a lot of things. Depending on your need 10GB may be enough for you.
5GB seems to be too small if you take into account future expansion. Should be adequate for a default installation though.
