well i had a few minutes to spare, here is an extremely simple bash script that will test to see if ftp is running on my ftp server. please keep in mind that ive never written a bash script before i only have very basic knowledge in c++.
i am actually going to expand this script to check for my other services, http ssh smtp and pop3.
again this is short and if you wanted you could use this to base off of.
