As for cd burning there are many.
k3b for the KDE stable and gcombust and gtoaster for the GNOME stable. There is also XCDRoast and many more and of coure the command line interface to cdrecord/cdrdao/dvdrecord! Smilie
Pesonally I use the command line, gcombust and k3b - that's pretty much order of preference too.

I am supposed to backup 10GB every day and so need an application, where if i drag and drop 10 gb of parent folder. then it should prompt for next cd, once 4.7gb of DVD is burnt.is there any way or any script that i can convert to GUI. inability to use cd rom or dvd burner

Using mkdvd to create bootable mksysb on dvd reports success but nothing on dvd?

brasero [options] [uri] [uri] ... DESCRIPTION
Brasero is an easy-to-use application for burning CD-R/Ws and DVD-R/Ws. With Brasero you can create data, audio, or video CDs, DVDs, and SVCDs. You can copy existing disks, use image files, or create new projects. Brasero includes tools such as a media previewer, integrity checker and a cover creator. OPTIONS
