I've never used Solaris before so my answer will more than likely be completely wrong but.....
Under FreeBSD you use tar -zxvf <file>
Is it the same for Solaris?

I have compressed a file in windows platform using 7zip into tar.z format. I try to uncompress in Unix using uncompress command. It doesn't work. Can anyone tell me wether there is any tools I can use in windows to generate a Tar.Z file which can be uncompress in unix.

When I gzopen & gzread from a gzip file, it works OK. But I when I try to uncompress the same data from memory (either by reading to memory with fread or mmap()ing) using decompress, I get Z_DATA_ERROR. Is it because gzip file has some kind of headers that uncompress doesn't want?

is it possible to uncompress on another directory ? At the moment I have my file to uncompress on /u07 that has 5GB free. When uncompressed it would be more then 6G , I want to send uncompressed file on another directory where I have more free space. is it possible ? How ?

at window 2000 and then ftp to Solaris 5.9 in binary mode.
gunzip -c jakarta-tomcat-5.0.30.tar.gz | tar -xvf -
tar: directory checksum error
if try this one,

NAME
suninstall - install the Solaris operating system
SYNOPSIS
suninstall
DESCRIPTION
install-solaris(1M) is now the preferred command for starting and restarting the Solaris Installation program. It should be used instead of
suninstall. suninstall is symbolically linked to install-solaris.
suninstall is a forms-based and graphical subsystem for installing the operating system.
suninstall exists only on the Solaris installation media (CD or DVD) and should only be invoked from there. Refer to the Solaris 10 Instal-
lation Guide: Basic Installations for more details.
suninstall allows installation of the operating system onto any standalone system. suninstall loads the software available on the installa-
tion media. Refer to the Solaris 10 Installation Guide: Basic Installations for disk space requirements.
