date | awk '{print $1" "$2}'
will do what you asked for - of course, there are lots of different ways to do this (especially if you still want to keep two separate date commands)
#!/bin/csh
set d1=`date | awk '{print $1}'`
set d2=`date | awk '{print $2}'`
echo "$d1 $d2"
exit
Of course, you are then using up computing power doing a command twice...
#!/bin/csh
date +"%a %h"
exit

I have got the following kine in my script
awk '{printf("%s,", $0);next}{printf("%s", $0)}' ORS="," a.txt > b.out
The contents of b looks somewaht like this:

Procedural style

Adds the specified DateInterval object to the specified DateTime object.
PARAMETERS
o $object
-Procedural style only: A DateTime object returned by date_create(3). The function modifies this object.
o $interval
- A DateInterval object
RETURN VALUES
Returns the DateTime object for method chaining or FALSE on failure.
