To sort dates it works best to convert them to epoch seconds - the number of seconds since Jan 1 970. This code adds an epoch time sorts based on the epoch time, then prints the original minus the seconds: this assumes some kin of linux OS -

@Drl - one of our senior people, may mention getting a linux package for date operations, one of the commands is "dsort" which does exactly what the code above does. Hopefully he will mention where to download it. I do not know

I check the man page but I still cannot see what this command is supposed to do
sort +5 -6 <file>
It just seems to sort the file as normal??

I have a list I want to randomly sort. It works fine in ubuntu but on a 'osx lion' sort dosen't have the --random-sort option.

Also, if I like to remove the row with repetition at both $2 and $3, Can I safely use

ds.log - Availability Suite data services log file
DESCRIPTION
The /var/adm/ds.log file contains the Availability Suite data services command log. The administration commands log activities to the file
in the format:
date time product: message
Note that when the size of the log file exceeds 10 Mbytes, ds.log is renamed /var/adm/ds.log.bak and a new /var/adm/ds.log file is cre-
ated.
The ds.log fields are:
date
The date format is mmm nn, where mmm is the local three-character abbreviation for the month and nn is the day of the month on which
the event occurred.
time
The time of the event, in hh:mm:ss format.
product
A product code that identifies which component of the data services produced the event. The code is separated from the message that
follows by a colon (:) and a space.
message
A message that can extend over more than one line describing the event that occurred. The second or following lines are not pre-
fixed by the date, time, and product code strings.
