Wow, very simple. But why wouldn't it work the way I was trying? (Using an if/else block)
Difficult to say without in depth analysis. Guessing from a first peek: You got the blocks mixed up. The grade can only be determined when all results are summed up, i.e. in the END section.
And, you're testing too many conditions. Once the average IS NOT greater than or equal, it is automatically less, and the test can go.

What does the 'R' represent in the second arg for the function?
Residual of former test - can go away.
How about
Not sure if the algorithm to determine the TOTAL possible is reliable in other contexts - it takes the average per assignment of the participants thus ruling out students have missed an exam.
I want to find the top N entries for a certain field based on the values of another field.
For example if N=3, we want the 3 best values for each entry:

Entry1 ||| 95
Entry1 ||| 30
Entry1 ||| 80
Entry1 ||| 50
Entry2 ||| 40
Entry2 ||| 20
Entry2 ||| 10

Hi everybody,
I'm trying to replace the $98 field with "T" if the last field (108th) is T
I've tried
awk 'BEGIN{OFS=FS="|"} {if ($108=="T")sub($98,"T"); print}' test.txt
but that doesn't do anything
also tried
awk 'BEGIN{OFS=FS="|"}{ /*T.$/ sub($98,"T")} { print}' test.txt

I am trying to confirm the counts from another code and tried the below awk, but the syntax is incorrect. Basically, outputting the counts of each condition in $8. Thank you :)

In the tab-delimeted input file below I am trying to use awk to update the value in $2 if TYPE=ins in bold, by adding the value of
HRUN= in italics. In the below since in line 1 TYPE=ins the 117282541 value in $2 has 6 added because that is the value of HRUN=.
Hopefully the awk is a start but I... (2 Replies)
I am trying to output a tab-delimited result that uses the data from a tab-delimited file to combine and subtract specific lines.
If $4 matches in each line then the first matching sequential $6 value is added to $2, unless the value is 1, then the original $2 is used (like in the case of line... (3 Replies)
In the perl below, which does execute, I am having trouble with the else in Rule 3. The digit in f{8} is extracted and used to update f accordinly along with the value in f.

In the awk below I am trying to copy the entire contents of $6 there may be multiple values seperated by a ;, to $8, if $8 is . (lines 1 and 3 are examples). If that condition $8 is not . gpiv_t-avg
GPIV_T-AVG(1) General Commands Manual GPIV_T-AVG(1)NAME
gpiv_t-avg - Calculates time-averaged mean and variances of PIV data.
SYNOPSIS
gpiv_t-avg [-dn | --dir_name dir basename] [-df | --first_dir N] [-dl | --last_dir N] [-fb | --file_basename file basename] [-ff |
--first_file N] [-fl | --last_file N] [-fx | --file_prefix] [-h | --help] [-n | --none] [-p | --print] [-relrms] [-uv | --print] [-v |
--version]
DESCRIPTION
gpiv_t-avg calculates mean and variances from a series of piv data resulting into time-averaged values. If no parameters are defined at the
command line, standard parameters will be used that are defined in the script. This program does not use the parameter resources from libg-
piv.
Options-dn | --dir_name dir base-name
The dir base-name represents the directory name without its last number. It is supposed that the last number in the directory name
is a counter.
-df | --first_dir
Defines the counter N of the first directory number at which the analyses starts.
-dl | --last_dir
Last directory number N at which the analyses ends.
-fb | --file_base_name file base-name
The filename has to be given without its .piv extension. The file base-name represents the file name without its last number, before
the extension. If not -fx key is used, it is supposed that the last number in the file name is a counter. The output will be written
to dir base-name/file base-name.ta_mean.piv and dirname/filename.ta_sdev.piv at which mean values and variances are written respec-
tively or to dirname/filename.ta_U.piv and to dirname/filename.ta_V.piv if -uv is used.
-ff | --first_file
Defines the counter Nof first file number at which the analyses starts.
-fl | --last_file
Last file number N at which the analyses ends.
-fx | --file_prefix
Prefix numbering to file base name.
-h | --help
On-line help.
-n | --none
Suppresses real execution.
-p | --print
Prints parameters, command line options and input and output filenames to stdout.
-relrms
Prints relative rms, related to the absolute mean value.
-uv Writes U and v displacements/velocities to separate outputs.
-v | --version
Prints version information to standard output, then exits successfully.
