Hmm. I use "dw" (delete word ) repeatedly to remove chunks of text. If someone else has a better choice I'd like to know, too.
yank does one or more whole lines, so it won't work.
You can use "d $" to delete from the current cursor position to the end of the line. AFAIK there is no way to remove a chunk of text from the middle of the line, except with X,x, or dw

I have created a dummy file -demo.txt
On my machine-A (oslevel-5300-08) I can display the file content in HEX format through VI editor using :%!xxd but on other machine-B (oslevel - 5300-06) , I get error as "sh: xxd: not found."

DESCRIPTION
Swac-get is a simple command line program which allows to download and install audio collections of words (SWAC) in a SQLite3 database.
Audio collections can be imported from the hard drive or directly from the Internet using the HTTP protocol. Swac-get is designed to be
used with swac-explore, a GTK+ interface which allows the browsing of the created SQLite3 database. An important set of free audio collec-
tions of words (SWAC) is available at: http://swac-collections.org/
