-w Matches must start and end at word boundaries. This is currently
implemented by surrounding each pattern with a pair of "\b", the Perl
regular expression word boundary metasequence. See perlre for the
precise definition of "\b".
This is one of a number of the (BSD) *nix tools written in perl. So if you have perl, you could get this capability. I have used this in situations where the local toolset does not include a useful option. I want to extract total count of "56677"
When I hit the following command
#cat filename | grep -w -c '56677'

i used egrep "pattern1|pattern2". But the whole word is searched. But i want the output if only the exact word is matched. i.e the output is got evenif a part of the pattern is matched.
I tried the -w opion but its showing usage error.
