I have hundreds of ".Z" files that I need to uncompress and gzip. I'm not sure how to handle this in a 'for loop'. I can get the uncompress part, but I'm not sure how to strip the .Z off the filename for the gzip step. Is it possible to pipe the output of uncompress to gzip? (2 Replies)

I have multiple files in directory , I have to compress these into a single file,
I tried using
gzip -r outfile.gz file1 file2 file3.
It is not working

find ./ -type f -mtime +1176 -print | xargs -n1 -i tar -cvf {}
Errror
tar: Missing filenames
Probably because of -
find ./ -type f -mtime -1 -print returns -

I would like to compress the files in multiple directories. For some reason, it only compress the first directory (/Sanbox/logs1) but not the rest of the other directories ("/Sanbox/logs2" "/Sanbox/logs3" "/Sanbox/logs4" ). Any help would be appreciated. Here's my code:

DESCRIPTION
httppower is a helper program for powerman which enables it to communicate with HTTP based power distribution units. It is run interac-

OPTIONS
-u, --url URL
Set the base URL.
INTERACTIVE COMMANDS
The following commands are accepted at the httppower> prompt:
auth user:pass
Authenticate to the base URL with specified user and password, using ``basic'' HTTP authentication which sends the user and password
over the network in plain text.
seturl URL
Set the base URL. Overrides the command line option.
get [URL-suffix]
Send an HTTP GET to the base URL with the optional URL-suffix appended.
post [URL-suffix] key=val[&key=val]...
