Opened a ticket with IBM, according to the ATAPE
readme it states that:
- Booting from a SAS attached tape drive is not supported on Power servers.
- Booting from a Fibre attached tape drive is not supported on Power servers.
So there goes being able to do a MKSYSB restore from a tape backup. yikes.

here are a couple of error messages I get during restore of mksysb from a AIX F80 to a F50. I have verified blocksize and have set them to 1024 which matches both the systems.
backup system is F80 and restore system is F50. Both are 4.3.3 ML10 level

I have a large number of backup tapes which were originally written with the AIX "backup" command. I now need to convert these to "tar" format, but unfortunately I no longer have access to an AIX machine. I have been able to connect the old tape drive (3590) to a Linux box and it works... Pretty penny's.
Just remember that mksysb and savevg are just front-ends for backup.
In other words, backups on AIX are organized by volume groups. mksysb is specialized for rootvg and savevg is used for other volume groups.
Ignoring that rootvg also creates files needed to boot a system... (1 Reply)

Description
Prior to Version 2.0, this device was referenced by tmscp(4).
The TMSCP driver provides a standard tape drive interface, as described in This is a driver for any controller that adheres to the Tape
Mass Storage Control Protocol (TMSCP). The TMSCP controllers communicate with the host through a packet-oriented protocol termed the Tape
Mass Storage Control Protocol. This driver also supports n-buffered reads and writes to the raw tape interface (used with streaming tape
