I am kinda puzzled. When and Why do we use md5sum? I've read man pages for mp5sum, but didn't get anything out of it. Please, can someone explain this to me in couple of words.

i downloaded a Linux distribution from a FTP site today, and i found there is a file named MD5SUM in the same directory, with the following contents:

Ok, I run a small script, that restarts a perl script when it fails (it's a very unreliable perl script, but I can't change it, it's crucial, and I don't know perl)

Is it possible to call the unix command md5sum from within a C program. I am trying to write a C program that scans a directory and computes the MD5Sum of all the files in the directory. Whenever I use md5sum 'filename' I get the error 'md5sum undeclared'. Is there a header file or some library... (3 Replies)

I currently have a shell script that takes an RPM and scp's it to a set of remote servers and installs it.

md5sum [OPTION] [FILE]... md5sum [OPTION] --check [FILE] DESCRIPTION
Print or check MD5 (128-bit) checksums. With no FILE, or when FILE is -, read standard input. -b, --binary read files in binary mode (default on DOS/Windows) -c, --check check MD5 sums against given list -t, --text read files in text mode (default) The following two options are useful only when verifying checksums: --status don't output anything, status code shows success -w, --warn warn about improperly formated checksum lines --help display this help and exit --version output version information and exit The sums are computed as described in RFC 1321. When checking, the input should be a former output of this program. The default mode is to print a line with checksum, a character indicating type (`*' for binary, ` ' for text), and name for each FILE. AUTHOR
