Note: \+ and \| are GNU extensions that will not work with regular sed
In regular sed, the equivalent would be something like:

sed 's/^[^[:lower:]]*//g; s/[^[:lower:]]*$//g; s/[^[:lower:]]\{1,\}/, /g'
