You could also use wget with the --progress=bar option which writes to STDERR or another alternate would be pv. You probably have to do something a little odd with that though, such as:-

wget -O - "${source_url}" | pv options > ${target_file}

The options could include things such as a file size estimate so you can get a percentage done/remaining time estimate etc.

I'd only go for pv in this case if the curl or wget options are unavailable to you for some reason, e.g. you are capturing the output in a variable to use later on for some reason, however if that is the case, maybe you would be better to set off a background process to give you feedback, similar to this:-

It's a bit messy, but could help if you read and process the STDOUT & STDERR from curl or wget.

OPTIONS

       Zenity supports several different types of options.

   Zenity-Specific Options

       --version	       Display the version number of Zenity.

   Help Options
       The following help options are supported:

   Dialog Options

       --filename=path	       Set the file or directory to select by default.

       --multiple	       Allow multiple selections.

       --separator=character   Set the separator character to return at the command line.  This option is used only when the dialog allows  multi-

   Informational Dialog Options

   List Dialog Options

   Progress-Indication Dialog Options

       --auto-close	       Close the dialog automatically when 100% has been reached.

       --percentage=number     Set the initial percentage of the progress bar.

       --pulsate	       Specify that the progress bar pulsates until an EOF character is read from the command line.

       --text=text	       Set the dialog text.

   Question Dialog Options
       The following question dialog options are supported:

       --text=text	       Set the dialog text.

   Text-Informational Dialog Options
       The following text-informational dialog options are supported:

       --editable	       Specify that the dialog contents are editable.

       --filename=path	       Set the file to display in the dialog.

   Warning Dialog Options

ENVIRONMENT VARIABLES

       The following environment variables affect the execution of zenity:

       ZENITY_OK, DIALOG_OK	       Set the return value for OK.

       ZENITY_CANCEL, DIALOG_CANCEL    Set the return value for Cancel.

       ZENITY_ERROR, DIALOG_ERROR      Set the return value for Error.

       ZENITY_ESC, DIALOG_ESC	       Set the return value for Escape.

EXIT STATUS

       The following exit values are returned:

       -1	Error

       0	OK

       1	Cancel, Escape

FILES

       The following files are used by this application:

       /usr/bin/zenity	       Executable for Zenity.
