If you are using pulseaudio, i do not think asound.conf is necessary, sound should work out of the box.
Do you have pacmd command available ?
If you do, please provide output of :
Ran under user from which pulse server is running (you desktop user probably)
Perhaps that will shed some light...

There is a change with UnIX version concerning these two platforms. I own a Power G4 Mac with OS 10.4.11 and a Mac Book Pro with Lion OS 10.7.2. There are some problems of compatibilities between the two UNIX versions.
