The rootvg on this system is around 40GB. Customer keeps a lot of data filesystems in rootvg (we didn't set this up), and doesn't want to change anything. They don't want to add any disk, as the server is migrating off onto our hardware.
In fact I think it's going to be possible for us to make a tape drive available to the destination server, so may not have to worry about the DVDs.
Didn't really want to exclude filesystems from the backup and have to get them across later, hence the question about making the DVDs from the bootable tape backup. Would have been handy if AIX provided that as an option, if not the prettiest solution. From what you say, it sounds like it's not likely to work though, and given that Dr Google doesn't come up with any hits regarding this approach, I'm guessing it's not possible.

Just wondering if I don't have tape drive or NIM server then what are the possible ways to make mksysb ?

backup_apropos - Displays each help entry containing a keyword string
SYNOPSIS
backup apropos -topic <help string> [-help]
backup ap -t <help string> [-h]
DESCRIPTION
The backup apropos command displays the first line of the online help entry for any backup command that has in its name or short
description the string specified by the -topic argument.
To display the syntax for a command, use the backup help command.
OPTIONS
-topic <help string>
Specifies the keyword string to match, in lowercase letters only. If the string is more than a single word, surround it with double
quotes (" ") or other delimiters.
-help
Prints the online help for this command. All other valid options are ignored.
OUTPUT
The first line of a command's online help entry names it and briefly describes its function. This command displays the first line for any
