You mean the ID should match the file with the "extension" .vcf stripped off? Or any other extension? What should happen if the two match? What if they don't?
And, get rid of the DOS line terminators in your text files you wish to process on *nix...

I have files with names that contain the date in several formats as, YYYYMMDD, DD-MM-YY,DD.MM.YY or similar combinations.
I know if a file fits in one pattern or other, but i donīt know how to extract the substring contained in the file that matches the pattern.

I know how to check if any file has a unix process using a file by looking at 'lsof <fullpath/filename>' command.
I think using lsof is very expensive. Also to make it accurate we need to inlcude fullpath of the file.

I want to run uniq against the file to make sure there are no duplicate names.....
uniq -d /path/to/input/file.txt

I am using grep to match a pattern, but the output is strange.
$ grep -r -o "pattern" *
Gives me:
Binary file foo1 matches
Binary file foo2 matches
Binary file foo3 matches
To find the lines before/after, I then have to use the following on each file:

NAME
XtGetClassExtension - locate a class extension record
SYNTAX
XtPointer XtGetClassExtension(WidgetClass object_class, Cardinal byte_offset, XrmQuark type, long version, Cardinal record_size);
ARGUMENTS
object_class
Specifies the widget class containing the extension list to be searched.
byte_offset
Specifies the offset in bytes form the base of the widget class of the extension field to be searched.
type Specifies the name of the class extension to be located.
version Specifies the minimum acceptable version of the class extension required for a match.
record_size
Specifies the minimum acceptable length of the class extension record required for match, or 0.
DESCRIPTION
The list of extension records at the specified offset in the specified widget_class will be searched for a match on the specified type, a
version greater than or equal to the specified version, and a record size greater than or equal the specified record_size if it is nonzero.
XtGetClassExtension returns a pointer to a matching extension record or NULL if no match is found. The returned extension record is owned
by the widget class and must not be modified or freed by the caller, except possibly to be modified by the widget class owner.
