Then I think something is odd about your data file. Maybe it has nulls in it or something else which wouldn't show on a terminal. Or maybe it's in a non-ASCII character set. Post the output of hexdump -C < datafile | head -n 200 please.

stty - set terminal options SYNOPSIS
stty [ option ... ] DESCRIPTION
Stty sets certain I/O options on the current output terminal. With no argument, it reports the current settings of the options.
