Sorry for moving around your thread, i wrongly thought it deals with the same problem as your other thread.

This is actually exactly the way cut works:
You probably didn't interpret the returned empty string as a result, like i did above in the little proof of concept.
Anyway, i strongly suggest you stop using csh and start using a less bugridden shell. AIX 4.3.2 (you might want to consider updating this to 4.3.3 ML12 too) offers a ksh88 and a ksh93.
I am new/just getting used to this group (Unix Forums), but did search around. I saw a listing for "openssh for AIX" in which a response indicated a link was posted in the original post, but I couldn't find that link or another "original post", so first, if someone could enlighten me why I couldn't... Hi,
I wish to find all lines that contain a specific search word, and then do few string operations on that line. The idea is to "fix" the file which has been moved from windows to unix.

mb_strcut
MB_STRCUT(3) 1 MB_STRCUT(3)mb_strcut - Get part of stringSYNOPSIS
string mb_strcut (string $str, int $start, [int $length = NULL], [string $encoding = mb_internal_encoding()])
DESCRIPTION mb_strcut(3) extracts a substring from a string similarly to mb_substr(3), but operates on bytes instead of characters. If the cut position
happens to be between two bytes of a multi-byte character, the cut is performed starting from the first byte of that character. This is
also the difference to the substr(3) function, which would simply cut the string between the bytes and thus result in a malformed byte
sequence.
PARAMETERS
o $str
- The string being cut.
o $start
- Starting position in bytes.
o $length
- Length in bytes. If omitted or NULL is passed, extract all bytes to the end of the string.
o $encoding
-The $encoding parameter is the character encoding. If it is omitted, the internal character encoding value will be used.
RETURN VALUES mb_strcut(3) returns the portion of $str specified by the $start and $length parameters.
