Under Unix there is a separation of process with different functions. mailx is a mail user agent. It creates a mail from the user and delivers it via sendmail-binary.Look here for an explanation:
At the linked thread, there is also a possibility howto use mailx with your own preferred smtp-server using command line arguments. Maybe this is an option for you too.
So in short mailx has neither an smtp server configured within itself nor does it even know about that server. There is probably an MTA(Mail Transfer Agent) at your HP-UX Box, which is responsible for sending mails. This MTA(Popular MTAs are postfix and exim, others are courier, sendmail(the above mentioned sendmail-binary and the sendmail-mta are quite different things)). Sometimes there are some simple relay-only-MTAs(like nullmailer), which are just transferring the mail to remote MTA and let that take care of the real mail processing.
Knowing nearly nothing about HP-UX, just assuming that the software-stack is some levels older than under linux, I'm guessing there is some version of the sendmail-mta running. So if available: ask your local sysadmin. configuring sendmail is fun. Though not the type of fun you are used to.
Configuration files are located standardized within the /etc directory. Somewhere in this directory subtree, the mailserver is configured.
For a start, you may search the /etc directory recursively for your current used mailserver, like this:

You can grep through your application directory too. Of course grep will not find your mailservername if contained inside a compressed file(like a jar).

I am facing problem with "mail" utility on redhat linux.
If I use ~c in a file and use that file as imput to mail, the mail is not sent to the adrress after ~c. Instead ~c apears in the mail content itself.

SYNOPSIS
exim_checkaccess IP-address email@address [more Exim options]
DESCRIPTION
Exim's -bh command line argument allows you to run a fake SMTP session with debugging output, in order to check what Exim is doing when it
is applying policy controls to incoming SMTP mail. However, not everybody is sufficiently familiar with the SMTP protocol to be able to
make full use of -bh, and sometimes you just want to answer the question "Does this address have access?" without bothering with any fur-
ther details.
The exim_checkaccess utility is a 'packaged' version of -bh. It takes two arguments, an IP address and an email address:
exim_checkaccess 10.9.8.7 A.User@a.domain.example
The utility runs a call to Exim with the -bh option, to test whether the given email address would be accepted in a RCPT command in a
TCP/IP connection from the host with the given IP address. The output of the utility is either the word 'accepted', or the SMTP error
response, for example:

550 Relay not permitted
When running this test, the utility uses "<>" as the envelope sender address for the MAIL command, but you can change this by providing
additional options. These are passed directly to the Exim command. For example, to specify that the test is to be run with the sender
address "himself@there.example" you can use:
exim_checkaccess 10.9.8.7 A.User@a.domain.example
-f himself@there.example
Note that these additional Exim command line items must be given after the two mandatory arguments.
