I've installed Oracle Solaris 10 1/13 on a Sun Fire V490 Server via its external Serial Port using a Cisco Console Cable connected to my Laptop PC running SecureCRT terminal emulation software emulating VT100 Terminal.
The Sun Fire V490 server has two on-board Ethernet interfaces, which reside on the system centerplane and conform to the IEEE 802.3z Ethernet standard.
Q1. During the installation of the Solaris 10 1/13 OS, I configured the primary on-board Ethernet interface with an IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway and DNS Server IP Addresses, and it seems it was configured successfully but I can't ping this primary interface, ce0, from other nodes on the network. When I ping it from the Sun Fire V490, I get " Port is Active." Also, see the CLI outputs below. Do I need to configure anything else on the server in order to be able to ping it?
Q2. I need to transfer some .tar and .tar.gz scripts from my Laptop PC to the Sun Fire V490 Server and place them in a temporary directory and then un-tar /unzip and execute them to load some applications on the Server. The Sun Fire V490 has a built in CD ROM [ DVD Drive ] and I burned my scripts on a blank DVD-R disk and placed it in the CD ROM and tried to transfer them over to the Server without much success. Can someone show me the CLI commands in Solaris 10 1/13 to accomplish this task?
Q3. In order to bring up the GUI on Solaris 10, I connected a generic monitor, keyboard and mouse to the SUN Fire V490, but the monitor displays "no DVI" / "no VGA" signal from the Server and hence nothing is displayed on the monitor. Do I need to connect a SUN-compatible Monitor, Keyboard and Mouse to the Server in order to see any output on the monitor? Do I need to configure Solaris 10 from the CLI prompt # for the ROOT to enable the monitor, keyboard and mouse?
Please note that I connect to this Server via its external serial port as mentioned above at the present time and login to it as ROOT.

I am new to Sun.
I brought Sun Fire 280R to practice UNIX. What are the requirements for the monitor/CRT? Will it burn out old non-Sun CRTs? Does it need LCD monitor?
Thanks. (3 Replies)

Also I note some strange behavior after server failures: when I ran any diagnostics from... (6 Replies)
