This needs bash:

      | mysql -uusername -p"password" database)"

or a little more secure...

sql_output="$(echo "select yourfield from yourtable;" \
      | mysql --defaults-extra-file=$HOME/.my.cnf_with_password -uusername database)"

mysql option "--skip-column-names" may be relevant too.
