If you're using awk anyway, why not do it all in awk?
Code:
zcat /a/b/c/file.gz |awk 'length > m{m = length}END{print m}'

gets rid of the need for sort, head, and cut.

       wc [OPTION]... [FILE]...

DESCRIPTION

       Print  byte, word, and newline counts for each FILE, and a total line if more than one FILE is specified.  With no FILE, or when FILE is -,

       -c, --bytes
