You can also put the awk-command into a pipeline:

typeset VAR=""
awk '....' file | read VAR

echo $VAR

Standard output of awk lands on <stdout> like any other output too. You can treat it the same way, therefore: command substitution (like Scrutinizer mentioned), pipelines, redirection and whatever else you'd do with <stdout>.

mkoctfile is used to compile source C, C++ or Fortran source code in dynamically loadble file for octave(1). OPTIONS
