Getting date from file name

Hi All
I am still learning awk, so please pardon me if question sounds stupid enough to ask. :-)

I will have multiple files in a Dir matching a pattern and at end will have date.

e.g.

Code:

PWD===>/home/user1
PWD===> ls -ltra PTRN*
-rw-rw-rw-    1 user1   group1           52 Mar 23 22:50 PTRN1_20160302.txt
-rw-rw-rw-    1 user1   group1           52 Mar 23 22:50 PTRN1_20160304.txt

So script may run from another dir say /home/user2/script and I need to get latest file from /home/user1 dir and get date from that file.

PWD===>pwd
/home/user2

PWD===>ls -ltra /home/user1/PTRN1*.txt

-rw-rw-rw-    1 user1   group1           52 Mar 23 22:50 /home/user1/PTRN1_20160302.txt
-rw-rw-rw-    1 user1   group1           52 Mar 23 22:50 /home/user1/PTRN1_20160304.txt

So how do I do that?

I am able to get the file name using following command

Code:

ls -ltra /home/user1/PTRN* | tail -1 | awk '{ print $NF }'

So above code will give me

/home/user1/PTRN1_20160304.txt

So my question is how do I get ending position of "PTRN1_" and get 8 characters after that.

so basically, I should get 20160304
