thank you for the quick reply but it does not seem to work. the pattern lines are still in the output and not in a seperated file.

You could redirect the output to a Output_file as follows then. EDIT: In case you need Output_file for matches and non-matches both then following may help you in same then.

I want to search a file for a string and then if the string is found I need the line that the string is on - but also the previous two lines from the file (that the pattern will not be found in)

I'd be grateful for your help with the following. I have a file (file.txt) with 10 columns and about half a million lines, which in simplified form looks like this:

DESCRIPTION
Graphics::Primitive::Insets represents the amount of space that surrounds something. This object can be used to represent either padding
or margins (in the CSS sense, one being inside the bounding box, the other being outside)

as_array
