What exactly do you mean by "waiting for tcp"? TCP establishes so-called "virtual channels" for communication. Think of them like telephone connections: you dial a number and once someone picks up at the other end the connection is established until the connection is dropped (one of the partners hangs up).

TCP connections (here is a difference to the telephone analogy) then go into a state which is called "FIN_WAITING" for some time until they are completely removed. You can influence the time this phase takes via TCP tuning options but in 99.9% of all systems this is not necessary.

So again: what is your problem and what do you mean by "waiting for tcp"?

If i fire followin command on unix (linux/solaris) and windows ftp serverX where serverX is not in the network, it takes more time to get reply on unix(3-4 mins) rather windows(1 min), can anybody tell me why this happens? and how to reduce this time span? (1 Reply)

NAME

       tcp-environ - TCP-related environment variables

DESCRIPTION

       The  following environment variables describe a TCP connection.	They are set up by tcp-env, tcpclient, and tcpserver.  Note that TCPLOCAL-
       HOST, TCPREMOTEHOST, and TCPREMOTEINFO can contain arbitrary characters.

       PROTO
	    The string TCP.

       TCPLOCALHOST
	    The domain name of the local host, with uppercase letters converted to lowercase.  If there is no currently available domain name  for
	    the local IP address, TCPLOCALHOST is not set.

       TCPLOCALIP
	    The IP address of the local host, in dotted-decimal form.

       TCPLOCALPORT
	    The local TCP port number, in decimal.

       TCPREMOTEHOST
	    The domain name of the remote host, with uppercase letters converted to lowercase.	If there is no currently available domain name for
	    the remote IP address, TCPREMOTEHOST is not set.

       TCPREMOTEINFO
	    A connection-specific string, perhaps a username, supplied by the remote host via 931/1413/IDENT/TAP.  If the remote host did not sup-
	    ply connection information, TCPREMOTEINFO is not set.

       TCPREMOTEIP
	    The IP address of the remote host.
