Arithmetic expansion allows the evaluation of an arithmetic expression and the substitution of the result. The format for arithmetic expansion is:
$((expression))
The old format $[expression] is deprecated and will be removed in upcoming versions of bash.
If you evaluate a text variable, it will evaluate to 0. Quote the variable when used as a parameter to a function as it contains spaces. You don't need the echo when assigning to a new variable.
