No need to delete the data.

If you are not using LVM, a simple newfs command will create filesystem, then you mount it and use it as you see fit.

If you are using LVM, simple do a pvcreate on it, and create a new VG or expand existing.
In case the disk has formerly been used as a HPUX LVM volume the pvcreate command will notify you that it belongs to a volume group. If you are sure it is not actually used, you can use pvcreate -f to force the creation.

If you actually require to delete the data, you can use dd and fill it up with zeros (but i fail to see the point in doing so).

I just installed IBMsdd on Solaris diver along with the patches recommended. I also installed 2 - 2Gigs qlogic fiber cards & the corresponding pkges for the cards. NAME

       pvremove - remove a physical volume

SYNOPSIS

       pvremove  [-d|--debug] [-h|--help] [-t|--test] [-v|--verbose] [--version] [-f[f]|--force [--force]] [-y|--yes] PhysicalVolume [PhysicalVol-
       ume...]

DESCRIPTION

       pvremove wipes the label on a device so that LVM will no longer recognise it as a physical volume.

OPTIONS

       See lvm(8) for common options.

       -ff, --force --force
	      Force the removal of a physical volume belonging to an existing volume group.  Normally vgreduce(8) should be used instead  of  this
	      command.	You cannot remove a physical volume which in use by some active logical volume.

       -y, --yes
	      Answer yes to all questions.
