I'm trying to sell the use of gzip instead of compress in our department. One issue I'm having (which is a showstopper) is that I lose the ownership when gzipping and gunzipping, though it's mentioned all over the web that files are supposed to keep ownership.

I'm using a while read statement to read in lines from a file, if a value (for example) is 1000.10 in a field, the last zero is removed leaving 1000.1 does anyone know a way to keep the field as it is in the original file? (1 Reply)

I'm newbie in UNIX programming, I have a problem with signals. I'm writing multithread program, where threads can die at any moment. When thread dies it generates signal SIGUSR1 to main thread and then thread dies. Main thread gets a signal and waits for thread dead.

NAME
g_attach, g_detach -- attach/detach GEOM consumers to/from providers
SYNOPSIS

g_attach(struct g_consumer *cp, struct g_provider *pp);

DESCRIPTION
The g_attach() function attaches given consumer cp to given provider pp, thus establishing a communication channel between the consumer and
the provider that allows to change access counts and perform I/O operations.
The g_detach() function detaches given consumer cp from its corresponding provider, tearing down the communication channel between them.
RESTRICTIONS
/CONDITIONS
g_attach():
The consumer must not be attached to a provider.
The operation must not create a topology loop.
The topology lock has to be held.
g_detach():
The consumer has to be attached.
The access count has to be 0.
There must be no active requests.
The topology lock has to be held.
RETURN VALUES
The g_attach() function returns 0 if successful; otherwise an error code is returned.
EXAMPLES
Create a consumer, attach it to a given provider, gain read access and clean up.
