Replace using awk on fixed width file.
All,

I used to use following command to replace specific location in a fixed width file.

Recently looks like my command stopped working as intended. We are on AIX unix.

Code:
awk 'function repl(s,f,t,v)
{ return substr(s,1,f-1) sprintf("%-*s", t-f+1, v) substr(s,t+1) }
NR<=10 { a=repl($0,474,1,"Y")
  a=repl(a,476,1,"N")
  a=repl(a,478,10,"2011-01-01")
  a=repl(a,489,10,"2011-12-31")
  print a
} 
NR>10 && NR<=20 { a=repl($0,474,1,"N")
  a=repl(a,476,1,"Y")
  a=repl(a,478,10,"2015-01-01")
  a=repl(a,489,10,"2015-12-31")

}
NR>20 ' filename  > filename.new



Currently the command is replacing incorrectly and the output seems to be wierd layout than the original file.

Appreciate your help on fixing this.

NAME

       fixadd - Safe function to add fixed point numbers clamping overflow. Allegro game programming library.

SYNOPSIS

       #include <allegro.h>

       fixed fixadd(fixed x, fixed y);

DESCRIPTION

       Although  fixed	point  numbers can be added with the normal '+' integer operator, that doesn't provide any protection against overflow. If
       overflow is a problem, you should use this function instead. It is slower than using integer operators, but if an overflow occurs  it  will
       set `errno' and clamp the result, rather than just letting it wrap. Example:

	  fixed result;
	  /* This will put 5035 into `result'. */
	  result = fixadd(itofix(5000), itofix(35));
	  /* Sets `errno' and puts -32768 into `result'. */
	  result = fixadd(itofix(-31000), itofix(-3000));
	  ASSERT(!errno); /* This will fail. */

RETURN VALUE

       Returns the clamped result of adding `x' to `y', setting `errno' to ERANGE if there was an overflow.
