You can delete it from a technical standpoint, since it is a rotated log and not being used currently (check that as per suggestion, but rotation tends to restart [r]syslog after it is done).
Question is if you should.
This is determined by your company policy what to do with rotated logs.
Does your company or some kind of regulation exists which will require you to keep the old messages ?

Can I delete the above file? It's big, about 1G. It's on a redhat ent 4 with ldap on it.
Is that safe to delete? It wasn't been used for already a month and it's in the backup storage.

The /var/adm/messages in Solaris seem to log more system messages/errors compared to /var/log/messages in Linux.
I checked the log level in Linux and they seem OK.
Is there any other log file that contains the messages or is it just that Linux doesn't log great many things? (2 Replies)

I need to delete more than 3 million files from /var/spool/clientmqueue. When I give the following command to delete the files, I get the error
# pwd
/var/spool/clientmqueue
# rm -f *

setarch - change reported architecture in new program environment and set personality flags
SYNOPSIS
setarch arch [options] [program [arguments]]
arch [options] [program [arguments]]
DESCRIPTION
setarch This utility currently only affects the output of uname -m. For example, on an AMD64 system, running 'setarch i386 program' will
cause 'program' to see i686 (or other relevant arch) instead of x86_64 as machine type. It also allows to set various personality options.
The default program is /bin/sh.
OPTIONS
-v, --verbose
Be verbose.
-h, --help
Display help (it is also displayed when setarch takes no arguments).
-3, --3gb
Specifies that processes should use a maximum of 3GB of address space on systems where it is supported (ADDR_LIMIT_3GB).
-B, --32bit
Turns on ADDR_LIMIT_32BIT.
-F, --fdpic-funcptrs
Userspace function pointers point to descriptors (turns on FDPIC_FUNCPTRS).
-I, --short-inode
Turns on SHORT_INODE.
-L, --addr-compat-layout
Changes the way virtual memory is allocated (turns on the ADDR_COMPAT_LAYOUT).
-R, --addr-no-randomize
