I was thinking of a general solution to rounding, not strictly rounding up. My bad.
Setting precision to zero seems to do what the OP wants though. Have to wait and see.
No. It does not. As I said before: "Using printf is great if you want to round to the nearest integer. It is not even close to providing something that calculates the ceiling of a decimal number."
For example, using the sample input data provided by the OP:
produces:
not the requested:
Is there some reason why you are so opposed to my suggestion in post #5 in this thread that actually produces the output requested by the OP?
Hi,
I am currently using tcsh
I am trying to round a decimal number to the ten-thousandths place
For instance:
1.23456 is rounded up towards 1.2346
I am not looking for truncation, but for rounding. Anyone know how to do this with awk or expr?
Thanks (2 Replies)

Hi Friends,
This is my last post for today.
My input file is
chr1 100 200
chr1 123 300
chr1 300 400
chr1 420 520
chr10 132344343 132348674
When I try using this command
awk '{v=($3+$2)/2; print $0"\t"v}' 1
This is my output

round
ROUND(3) 1 ROUND(3)round - Rounds a floatSYNOPSIS
float round (float $val, [int $precision], [int $mode = PHP_ROUND_HALF_UP])
DESCRIPTION
Returns the rounded value of $val to specified $precision (number of digits after the decimal point). $precision can also be negative or
zero (default).
Note
PHP doesn't handle strings like "12,300.2" correctly by default. See converting from strings.
PARAMETERS
o $val
- The value to round
o $precision
- The optional number of decimal digits to round to.
o $mode
- Use one of the following constants to specify the mode in which rounding occurs.
+--------------------+---------------------------------------------------+
| Constant | |
| | |
| | Description |
| | |
+--------------------+---------------------------------------------------+
| | |
| PHP_ROUND_HALF_UP | |
| | |
| | Round $val up to $precision decimal places away |
| | from zero, when it is half way there. Making 1.5 |
| | into 2 and -1.5 into -2. |
| | |
| | |
|PHP_ROUND_HALF_DOWN | |
| | |
| | Round $val down to $precision decimal places |
| | towards zero, when it is half way there. Making |
| | 1.5 into 1 and -1.5 into -1. |
| | |
| | |
|PHP_ROUND_HALF_EVEN | |
| | |
| | Round $val to $precision decimal places towards |
| | the next even value. |
| | |
| | |
|PHP_ROUND_HALF_ODD | |
| | |
| | Round $val to $precision decimal places towards |
| | the next odd value. |
