I would recommend using cat

That might sound flippant, but why re-invent the wheel unless this is Homework - and there are specific forums for this with rules etc. so that we don't take courses for you.

gnome-sound-properties - enable sound, and associate sounds with events SYNOPSIS
gnome-sound-properties [--apply] [--get-legacy] [--init-session-settings] [gnome-std-options] DESCRIPTION
The GNOME sound preference tool enables you to control which sound device is used for audio playback. You can specify sounds to play when particular events occur, and control system beep behavior. OPTIONS
The following options are supported: --apply Apply the settings and quit (supported for backwards compatibility only) --init-session-settings Just apply settings and quit (supported for backwards compatibility only) --get-legacy Retrieve and store legacy settings gnome-std-options Standard options available for use with most GNOME applications.
