I hope you know that xinetd conflicts with the inetd that ships with Solaris <=9,
and with the SMF that ships with Solaris >=10 (has replaced inetd).
Maybe you can simply use the Solaris standard tool? Information:
i want to edit inetd.conf for security on my redhat 7.1 box, but i dont have it in my /etc directory, rather, i have xinetd.conf. Can i use xinetd.conf for the same purpose, is it as useful as inetd.conf? (2 Replies)

haha it's me agian, i think that my xinetd is messed up, i am unable to stop it. I can start it though...lol. I just wonderd how can i uninstall it so i can reinstall it...maybe this time it'll work. I'm running RH 7.1 i think.

I have read thru the /etc/rc.d/init.d script and i think xinetd depends on service network as it checks whether the variable NETWORKING is set or not

inetd2rlinetd - configuration file converter
SYNOPSIS
inetd2rlinetd [--force-overwrite] [--print-file-names] [--add-from-comment] [-f file] [-l entry] [directory]
DESCRIPTION
inetd2rlinetd is a script to convert typical inetd.conf(5) style configuration files to rlinetd.conf(5) style configuration files.
OPTIONS -f file
File in inetd.conf(5) format which will be converted. Default in stdin.
-l entry
A line in inetd.conf(5) format. Only that line will be converted. On Debian systems, this option is used internally by the update-
inetd(8) command.
directory
Output files directory. Default is /etc/rlinetd.d.
--force-overwrite
Forces overwriting existing files with new version.
--print-file-names
Prints to standard output list of generated files.
--add-from-comment
Puts special comment with original inetd.conf(5) line in front of each converted service.
NOTE
Options -f and -l cannot be used together.
