I would try converting "empty" columns into non-empty columns, plugging them with spaces or something. Or just use a language which considers them as multiple columns already, like awk.
That is because everything after the empty string (of the second column) is assigned to variable Bas well. This is by design. Try:

IFS=":" read A B dummy <<<"A::B"
$ echo $A
A
$ echo $B

$

Either the number of variables needs to be equal to the number of columns in the file. Or the number of variables can be fewer, but then unimportant columns at the end need to land in some sort of dummy variable..

db2_field_name - Returns the name of the column in the result set

SYNOPSIS

       string db2_field_name (resource	$stmt, mixed  $column)

DESCRIPTION

	Returns the name of the specified column in the result set.

PARAMETERS

	      o $stmt
		- Specifies a statement resource containing a result set.

	      o $column
		-  Specifies  the  column in the result set. This can either be an integer representing the 0-indexed position of the column, or a
		string containing the name of the column.

RETURN VALUES

	Returns a string containing the name of the specified column. If the specified column does not exist in the result set,  db2_field_name(3)
       returns FALSE.
