i have big test file that has allot of structure text something like this :

<blah action>
somthing 1
somthing 2
</blah>
</foo1 >
now i will like to insert 2 more lines of text below the <blah action>
so it will be like :

I'm a newbie at shell scripting and regular expressions and I just need to take a file that's arranged like the one below, remove all leading and trailing whitespace and add a line break after each word. My command is either wrong or not interpreted properly by me shell

Following is an example line.
echo "192.22.22.22 \"33dffwef\" 200 300 dsdsd" | sed "s:\(\ *\ \):\1:"
I want it's output to be
200
However this is not the case. Can you tell me how to do it? I don't want to use AWK for this. Secondly, how can i fetch just 300? Should I use "\2"... (3 Replies)

I have a file which has about 100 lines, and there is no end of line (line break \n) at the end of each line, and this is causing problem when i paste them into an application.

How can I convert this:

I tried this command but it is not working:
awk '{sub(/+$/,"\t", $1)}{print}'
Any suggestions on how to fix this?

DESCRIPTION

isalnum()

isupper()
checks for an uppercase letter.
isxdigit()
checks for a hexadecimal digits, i.e. one of 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 a b c d e f A B C D E F.
RETURN VALUE
The values returned are nonzero if the character c falls into the tested class, and a zero value if not.
CONFORMING TO
ANSI - C, BSD 4.3. isascii() is a BSD extension and is also an SVID extension. isblank() is a GNU extension.
NOTE
The details of what characters belong into which class depend on the current locale. For example, isupper() will not recognize an A -
umlaut as an uppercase letter in the default C locale.
