Apologies for being vague . Wanted to know if this is possible in any of Linux or Unix platforms. We are using Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.8.

I have a sun fire v480r server. it has 2 cpu. One of cpu have become faulty. Now i want to run server on a single cpu. My service provider says it cant be done, you have to replace the motherboard. Is there a way to make bash [or another shell] use all CPU cores to execute a single script?

I wrote a very simple script that matches combinations of alphabetic characters (1-5). I want to use it to test CPU speeds of different hardware/platforms. please help on this issue. I take care of a production enterprise application , it is a java process quite complex that is a middleware application. The process runs 24 hours a day.
