For your information (FYI):
This problem was caused by an outage at our data center. There was no hardware or software error on the server; but the server was found "powered off" in the data center; but of course it was not a proper shutdown; so the only explanation is either (1) was removed from power or (2) switched off.
It was the abrupt powering off of the server which caused our database to lose around 30K records (posts and thread) during a busy time; but we have backups and database logging in place, so we were able to recover around 99.99993 percent of the records.
Before the records were restored, there were links to our site to threads and posts which existed before the records were corrupted; and it took us a few hours to insure we restored the database property; and so it has been restored to 99.99993 percent .. which is not bad considering the chaos in the data center.
I'm still trying to get to the bottom of what happened in the data center where our server resides; and we will be making some decisions soon about moving the server to another data center; or we will seek strong assurances from the existing data center for better service in the future.
So far, I've not be satisfied with what I'm hearing from the data center management team; and I am quite angry about the quality of service from our server provider.
Note: I worked over 18 hours restoring the data; and am pleased we could recover all but a small handful of records; which is great considering the data center chaos and our server just losing power (in some mysterious way the data center cannot explain).
(At the moment, I'm a bit exhausted over the entire event... )
