What is the & for in Unix?? say for example that you have a line in a shellscript that will startup a executable and you have the ampersand at the end of the line, what is it for??

In my program, I'm using argc and argv to accept command line arguments. However, if I have to get the '&' to work i.e. make it run the child as a background process, do I have to write some special code in C or does Unix handle it automatically? I want to replace a defined string with a string from a database field (dynamic).
e.g.

The Problem is that the $HNAME variable can contain Special characters like '&'

tt_session_prop_add -- add a new character-string value to the end of the list of values
SYNOPSIS

const char *sessid,
const char *propname,
const char *value);
DESCRIPTION
The tt_session_prop_add function adds a new character-string value to the end of the list of values for the property of the specified ses-
sion.
The sessid argument is the name of the session joined. The application can use the sessid value returned when tt_default_session is
called. The propname argument is the name of the property to which a value is to be added. The name must be less than 64 bytes. The
value argument is the character string to add to the property name list.
RETURN VALUE
Upon successful completion, the tt_session_prop_add function returns the status of the operation as one of the following Tt_status values:
TT_OK The operation completed successfully.
TT_ERR_NOMP
The ttsession(1) process is not running and the ToolTalk service cannot restart it.
TT_ERR_PROPLEN
The specified property value is too long. (The maximum size is implementation specific, but is at least 64.)
TT_ERR_PROPNAME
The specified property name is syntactically invalid.
TT_ERR_SESSION
The specified ToolTalk session is out of date or invalid.
