You are printing string find out difference here

Integer
Code:
$ a=10; b=8
$ printf "%d\n" $(echo "$a-$b" | bc)
2

Floating point
Code:
$ a=10; b=8
$ printf "%f\n" $(echo "$a-$b" | bc)
2.000000

String
Code:
$ a=10; b=8
$ printf "%s\n" "$a-$b"
10-8

print as string after calculation
Code:
$ a=10; b=8
$ printf "%s\n" $((a-b))
2
