A test -f must have exactly one argument.
Try this instead

files=`
ls -lrt /dev/myfolder/someword* | grep "Oct 02" |
awk '{print $9}'
`
if [ -n "$files" ]
then
   echo "$files"
else
   echo "some message"
fi
