Top Forums Shell Programming and Scripting Time take between first and last file creation Post 302838943 by krishmaths on Wednesday 31st of July 2013 01:16:24 AM

Do you have control over the process that creates those multiple files? If yes then you can add something like this in the code.

At the start of the script:
Code:
startsec=$(date +%s)

At the end of the script:
Code:
 endsec=$(date +%s)
 duration=$(expr $endsec - $startsec)
 echo $duration

In case you need to find the difference between first file and last file in a directory, below script can be used.

Code:
DIR=/your/directory

first_ts=$(ls -lt $DIR | tail -1 | awk '{print $8}')
last_ts=$(ls -ltr $DIR | tail -1 | awk '{print $8}')

first_mm=$(echo $first_ts | cut -d":" -f 1)
first_ss=$(echo $first_ts | cut -d":" -f 2)
last_mm=$(echo $last_ts | cut -d":" -f 1)
last_ss=$(echo $last_ts | cut -d":" -f 2)

first_totsec=$(expr $first_mm \* 60 + $first_ss)
last_totsec=$(expr $last_mm \* 60 + $last_ss)

duration=$(expr $last_totsec - $first_totsec)

if [ $duration -gt 60 ]
then
  echo "\n" Diff between first and last file mtime: $(echo $duration | awk '{printf("%2d min %2d sec",$1/60,$1%60)}') "\n"
else
  echo "\n Diff between first and last file mtime: $duration seconds.\n"
fi

DIR(3)									 1								    DIR(3)

dir - Return an instance of the Directory class

SYNOPSIS
Directory dir (string $directory, [resource $context]) DESCRIPTION
A pseudo-object oriented mechanism for reading a directory. The given $directory is opened. PARAMETERS
o $directory - Directory to open o $context - Note Context support was added with PHP 5.0.0. For a description of contexts, refer to "Streams". RETURN VALUES
Returns an instance of Directory, or NULL with wrong parameters, or FALSE in case of another error. EXAMPLES
Example #1 dir(3) example Please note the fashion in which Directory.read(3)'s return value is checked in the example below. We are explicitly testing whether the return value is identical to (equal to and of the same type as - see Comparison Operators for more information) FALSE since otherwise, any directory entry whose name evaluates to FALSE will stop the loop. <?php $d = dir("/etc/php5"); echo "Handle: " . $d->handle . " "; echo "Path: " . $d->path . " "; while (false !== ($entry = $d->read())) { echo $entry." "; } $d->close(); ?> The above example will output something similar to: Handle: Resource id #2 Path: /etc/php5 apache cgi cli NOTES
Note The order in which directory entries are returned by the read method is system-dependent. PHP Documentation Group DIR(3)
